Self-concealing of facial expressions by an adult wild Barbary macaque male was observed and filmed 22 times. This study, thus, reports the first case of face concealment behaviour in a wild monkey species. The behaviour lends itself both to complex cognitive and to simpler explanations.
Taken together, these findings indicate that simply exposing people to Barbary macaque facial expressions and their corresponding emotional states using pictures on a board as is routinely done in a wildlife tourism or zoo setting, might not be a sufficient educational tool to reduce misinterpretation of an animal's emotional state.
